Perilous Times in South Union -
Oct 21-23, 2011 - Location - Shaker Museum at South Union Kentucky. Sponsor/Host: WIG.
1861 was a time of change and confusion for many, hope and excitement
for others. This was certainly true for the citizens in and around Logan
County Kentucky. From August to December, Infantry and Cavalry troops
passed through Logan County heading from Bowling Green to Russellville
gathering much need war materials for the fledging Confederate forces,
trying to raise men for the impeding fight, and just moving military
forces. Troops under the command of Generals Albert S. Johnston and
Simon B. Buckner all moved through this area.
This event will recreate actions of the early
Confederate forces that moved through this area from August to December
1861. We will be portraying infantry and cavalry forces. 2011 WIG Supported Events Living History At Fort Gaines - February 4-6, 2011 - Location - Fort Gaines Park, Mobile, Alabama Sponsor/Host: Independent Rifles. The Independent Rifles are hosting a winter garrison living history at Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island, Alabama. Fort Gaines was part of a three fort system at the mouth of Mobile Bay that was designed to defend the bay against naval assault. The three forts were Fort Morgan, Fort Gaines, and a small fort in Grant's pass (directly behind Dauphin Island) called Fort Powell. Fort Gaines was taken by the Alabama Volunteer Corps in 1861 and remained in Confederate hands during the majority of the war. Our goal for the weekend is to illustrate to the public what the Confederate garrison would have looked like in the winter of 1861-62. Since the fort sits on a local tourist attraction, Dauphin Island, the site gets a great deal of visitors year round. This, plus the impressive nature of the site itself, makes Fort Gaines an ideal place to host a living history. If you have any questions contact Patrick Landrum - westernpicket63@yahoo.com
