history moving from the Craven House to Point Park. We will do our best
to conduct the movements and actions in real time. Contact
Herb Coats for more information.

Guidelines
With this set of guidelines we are not directly
recreating one specific unit. Over the weekend we are actually
interpreting various commands that were involved with the battle. These
commands include Walthall's, Brown's, Pettus', Moore's, and Holtzclaw's
brigades. The research into the gear that these men used is reflected as
best as possible in the guidelines below. One helpful source with this
are the two photos of Confederate prisoners captured after the Battle of
Missionary Ridge.
Jackets:
1. Deep South Depot Jackets of Proper Construction (Atlanta, Augusta,
Mobile, Milledgeville, Columbus Depots)
2. Civilian Sack Coat, Frock Coat, Paletot, etc of Proper Construction
and materials (Many accounts show the soldiers asking for clothing made
from home after the Battle of Chickamauga)
3. Non-Descript Military Style Jacket of "home made" origin (The photos
of the Confederate prisoners show them definitely wearing short jackets
of a non descript nature.)
Trousers:
1. CS Issue trousers of Proper Construction (gray, brown, light blue,
etc in color.)
2. Civilian Pattern trousers Proper Construction (see above colors, no
outlandish colors, checks, plaids, etc.)
NO federal sky blue trousers Period.
Shirt:
1. CS issue shirt (osnaburg, wool, etc)
2. Civilian pattern shirt (Again, no outlandish colors please)
3. British Import Shirt
Shoes:
1. Confederate issue
2. Civilian shoes or boots
3. Federal issue brogans, limited use
(The terrain at Lookout Mountain is of course rugged. Make sure you can
make it to the top with your shoes)
Headgear:
1. Slouch hats of proper construction with a sweat band and exterior
ribbon. Colors can include black, tan, olive, brown, etc. A good slouch
hat goes a long way.
2 Kepis LIMITED USE These must be of proper construction and materials.
A decent gauge of the percentage of kepis to slouch hats with the AOT at
this time is the photos of the prisoners taken after the battles around
Chattanooga. (see link below) Most of these men had slouch hats.
Haversacks:
1. C. S. pattern (Branch, Bailey, etc) cloth or tarred canvas
CS haversacks are generally extremely cheap to either make or purchase,
please make an effort to obtain a good CS bag.
Canteens:
1. Wooden type. Made of cedar/cypress/cherry, etc. Various styles.
2. Tin Drum (cloth or leather strap)
3. Federal Smooth Side with cloth strap
(The Confederate Prisoner photo shoes a good mix of tin drum and Federal
canteens)
Knapsacks:
1. Imported English Issac Campbell and Co. maker.
2. Confederate issue/manufacture of any of above styles. (Mex War, etc)
3. Bed Roll
(Returns for Cheatham's Division before Chickamauga show a good number
of British knapsacks being issued)
Ground Cloths:
1. Painted/tarred canvas (hand finished edges, small grommets)
2. Oil Cloth (hand finished edges)
3. Federal Rubberized Ground cloth (proper repro please)
(It will be in your best interest to bring one of these above listed
ground covers)
Tentage:
1. Confederate Issue Fly
2. Canvas Shelter Half (home made, CS issue,)
3. Fed Issue Shelter Half (last choice)
(Get with a pard with this. The weather on Lookout Mountain can be mild
and sunny to cold and rainy in mid November. Be prepared!)
Blankets:
1. English Imports
2. C.S. Issue
3. Civilian
Cartridge boxes:
1. A.O.T. identified box (Augusta, Atlanta, Macon, Montgomery, etc)
2. Tarred canvas box, with or without sling
3. Imported English box
Cap pouches:
1. A.O.T. identified pouch (Augusta, Atlanta, Macon, Montgomery, etc)
2. Tarred canvas A.O.T. pouch.
3. English Enfield pouch, white buff or darkened types
Waist belt:
1. Frame type, rectangular CSA, clipped corner CS, forked tongue, roller
buckle and Georgia Frame are all acceptable.
2. Tarred canvas with above plates
3. English Import "Snake Buckle"
Weapons: This is where you can bring your non reenacting
"standard" musket. General Moore in his AAR stated that his men had sub
standard muskets (smooth bores conversions) from the Demopolis Depot
when his Alabamians were refitted after being paroled. Other units in
Cheatham's command show returns with Enfield Muskets and Rifles.
1. 1853 Enfield rifled-musket
2. 1854 Lorenz rifle
3. 1841 Mississippi rifle
4. 1822 Springfield Conversion Musket
5. 1816 Springfield Conversion Musket
6. 1842 Springfield Musket
7. Potsdam Musket, Belgian Musket
Rounds and Caps: Please bring 60 rounds along with 70 caps for multiple
firing demonstrations. All weapons should have proper
modifications, and be in clean working condition. All weapons will be
inspected by the Company Commanders and Battalion Staff. If you wish to
bring an original musket, please make sure it is in serviceable
condition, or you will not be allowed to fire it on NPS property. If you
wish to bring an original please contact Herb Coats at
Menion687@aol.com.
